BOOK A PRIVATE

who we are

Kupala is a virtual yoga studio and collaborative space devoted to connection—to one’s Self and with one another. Here, yoga is not just a practice on the mat, but a way of living that invites curiosity, creativity, and collective care.

Named after a Slavic river goddess, Kupala is a symbol of transformation, joy, creativity, and the elements of water and fire. Kupala is also celebrated in Ukraine as a Midsummer festival, honoring renewal, connection to nature, and the turning of the seasons. The word Kupala itself stems from the Proto-Indo-European root kump, meaning “to gather together” or “to unite,” a meaning that beautifully mirrors the essence of yoga, which comes from the Sanskrit root yuj—“to yoke” or “to unite.” In this way, our name pays tribute to April’s Ukrainian-Canadian heritage and honors her late father, who encouraged her to pursue yoga as a way of life before his passing. Founded by April and Jess, a married couple based in Los Angeles, Kupala emerged from their shared love of yoga philosophy and their commitment to social and environmental justice activism. Rooted in nature and nourished by community, the archetype of Kupala reflects the ever-changing cycles of life and the power that arises when we move, breathe, and gather with intention.

We strive to connect people with the traditional yogic teachings of non-harm (ahimsa), self-control, and right action. These teachings remind us that yoga is a discipline of awareness—one that shapes how we show up in our bodies, our relationships, and the world.

In a time of growing uncertainty and injustice, our vision for Kupala weaves yoga together with social and environmental awareness to cultivate a community of spiritually grounded, justice-oriented practitioners. This is a movement toward conscious living, compassionate action, and shared transformation. Join us!

"I have worked with April consistently for years, and she has played a meaningful role in my long-term health and physical resilience. I manage a significant back condition, and her command of anatomy and intelligent movement has been instrumental in my healing. Her dual certification in yoga and Pilates, along with her experience working in a physical therapy clinic, is evident in every session. What sets her apart is her ability to design sessions that are both challenging and responsive to individual needs. She consistently meets me where I am physically, while helping me build strength, stability, and mobility over time."

-Cara E., Executive Director

"When I was new to my yoga practice, April created a space where I felt safe, supported, and free to move at the pace my body allowed at the time. I have practiced at many studios across the world, yet April’s class is the one I look forward to returning to most. No matter your level or experience, she meets you exactly where you are and kindly guides you through the teachings of yoga with presence, grace, and genuine care."

-Jason H., Interior Designer

"I’ve been practicing yoga with April for nearly 10 years, and she was the very first teacher who introduced me to yoga, an experience that completely changed my life, and my relationship with my mind and body. April’s teaching is spiritual and rooted in a profound knowledge of the practice. She creates a space that feels safe, compassionate, and genuinely supportive, no matter what is going on in your body or where you are on your yoga journey. Every class with April is grounding, intentional, and filled with kindness, and I’m endlessly grateful for every chance I get to learn from and practice with her."

-Sam B., Music Executive

"From my 14-year-old to my 80-year-old father-in-law, April’s classes truly meet each of us where we are. Whether I need to loosen up and move better or be challenged in a flow, April’s sequences always deliver."

-Eric A., Financial Advisor
