Yoga philosophy

our recommendations for online lectures and readings to help guide your Svādhyāya (self-study)

Rishi’s quick explainer video is really helpful for understanding the basics of Samkhya Philosophy, a very complex knowledge system. You need at least some introduction to this system to understand other yogic texts like Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras.

If you like the video, make sure to give Rishi a thumbs up and a follow!

These are a series of lectures, but well worth your time, we promise. Dr. Edwin Bryant, professor of Religions of India at Rutgers University, is an engaging lecturer and well-established authority on the yogic texts. His lecture series on Patanjali's Yoga Sutras are a provocative and insightful deep dive into the traditional meaning and intention of these ancient teachings.

Dr. Bryant’s translation and commentary on the Sutras

Swami Sarvapriyananda's lecture gives us a glimpse into Vedanta—literally “the end of the Vedas”— a core Hindu philosophy rooted in the Upanishads. It teaches that the true Self (Atman) is divine and identical with ultimate reality (Brahman), and that liberation comes through realizing this truth via self-knowledge. Emphasizing direct experience over dogma, Vedanta offers practical paths of study, contemplation, and disciplined practice, and is expressed through multiple schools interpreting its key texts, the Prasthānatrayī: the Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, and Brahma Sutras.

Most of us in the West have only ever identified with yoga as a physical practice. But there is SO MUCH more to it than that. Here are some great videos from Rishi Dave that briefly explain the Four Paths of Yoga. Again, make sure to give Rishi a follow if you enjoy his videos as much as we do!

Karma yoga

Karma Yoga, one of the four paths of yoga described in the Bhagavad Gita, is the practice of selfless service. Through serving without attachment to results, we soften the ego, cultivate humility, and begin to recognize the divine in all beings. When service is truly selfless, our work becomes sacred—and compassion arises naturally. Karma Yoga is not always easy, but it is deeply fulfilling. Practiced consistently, it radiates outward, inspiring others and quietly transforming the world around us. There are countless ways to begin: small, unseen acts of kindness for family, colleagues, or animals; regular donations to causes you care about; or, most powerfully, volunteering your time. Offering your labor without complaint or expectation—simply because it helps others—becomes a living meditation. When practiced as yoga, selfless service is a purifying fire (tapas) that clears the mind, supports deeper meditation, and allows us to embody the peace and change we wish to see in the world.
